day #9: cause I know them boys, they like those open toes

Sweater – LOFT
Pants – Express
Shoes – Banana Republic
Earrings – White House Black Market

Any other Katharine McPhee fans out there?  Anyone?  Anyone?  Bueller?  No?  Ok, maybe I’m the only one but I’ve loved her ever since her Idol days.  Any girl who can sing a bubblegum pop song about shoes that causes me to bust out some serious dances moves every time I hear it is a-ok in my book.

I have always thought that open-toe shoes were only appropriate for the spring and summer months but this year I’m throwing that rule out the window.  Especially when said shoes are super cute suede wedges from Banana Republic that I got a major deal on.  But before you start thinking all sorts of ‘that girl is crazy’ thoughts, I only wore these outside for photo purposes.  I wear my UGG cardy boots to/from work almost daily and always throw a pair of nicer shoes in my bag for when I get to the office.  It’s a no brainer for me during the winter.  Except for that day 2 weeks ago when I arrived at work and realized I had grabbed 2 different shoes.  No joke..and not even the same color.  Luckily, I have a drawer full of old pairs of (matching) shoes in my desk just in case.

January Shopping Update

Do you remember how I was a little concerned in this post because I had already spent $80+ only 4 days into the month of January?  Well, I’m proud to report that I am currently under budget for the month and have still enjoyed several purchases since my last update.

The girls and I had a wonderful day yesterday perusing the mall and catching up on chit-chat over dinner at Chili’s.  (I had the avocado burger..I rarely crave hamburgers but this one was amazing!  Highly recommended!!)   I had a couple of gift cards/store credits burning a hole in my wallet and I put them to good use.  Here are my finds:

I’ve been loving the look of the infinity/cowl loop scarves lately and fell in love with this one that I found at New York & Company.  It’s lightweight and the color is beautiful.  I paid for this using part of a store credit I had received after returning a set of hair combs that I never ended up wearing on my wedding day.  The original price was $24.95 and I paid $8.63 using the credit.  I also recently purchased a camel colored poncho (no longer available online but see a photo here) using part of my store credit as well.  It was originally $34.95 and I paid $6.51 using the credit.  I’m actually wearing it today with a black long-sleeved Hanes shirt underneath (purchased at Wal-Mart for $6.53) and a pair of dark wash denim.  The outside temp right now is only 6 degrees but I’m feeling very cozy wearing the poncho!

Next, I stopped at Express where I found a couple of pairs of yoga-style fold-over pants.  They are a little long for my short legs but sooo comfy.  I’ll admit that I didn’t really need these but at $12.95 each (originally $29.99 per pair) I couldn’t pass them up.  The first thing I do when I get home from work at the end of the day is change into a pair of comfy lounge pants so I know I’ll get alot of use out of them.

One of our last stops of the day was Banana Republic where all of the sale items were an additional 50% off.  These gorgeous gray suede wedges were easily my best find of the day.  The original price was $120 on these puppies and I paid..wait for it..$19.43 using a gift card.  That’s more than an 80% discount off of the original price!  I was pretty impressed with myself and so was the hubby, even though he thinks I already have more than enough shoes to last a lifetime.  ; )

The only other item I bought yesterday was a Buffalo Bills NFL Apparel hat from Old Navy on mega-clearance for just $1.40 (originally $12.50).  I thought it was a strange thing to find at Old Navy but hubby is just a little obsessed with the Bills so I knew I had to get this for myself to show my support.  We try to get to at least 1 game each season and now I have a hat to wear for early season games as well as a winter hat to wear for cold weather games (gift from MIL last x-mas).

This sweater, from LOFT, was not one of yesterday’s finds but I did pick it up during my lunch break a couple of weeks ago.  The store was having a special $15 sweater promo for just that day and I fell in love with this purple color (the website had it listed as ‘desert mauve’).  It was originally $59 but I ended up paying $16.31 which I thought was a steal.  I’m obsessed with chunky sweaters!

Not including gift card/store credit purchases, my January spending is now at $165.80 of my $200 monthly budget and I don’t anticipate that I’m going to be doing any more shopping before the month ends.  Ok, that’s a lie..there’s one splurge purchase that I am considering (it’s almost tax refund time!) and if I go for it then I am resolving to participate in Kendi’s 30 for 30 remix challenge starting on Feb 1st and not shop for the entire month.  : )

Review: Nine West ‘Nuncio’ Pump

Nine West ‘Nuncio’ Pump @Nine West
Original Price = $69.00
Purchase Price = $30.44

At the same time I ordered the taupe pumps in my previous review, I also ordered this pump in the dark natural shade to wear at work.  The color was a bit lighter than what I was originally looking for but the price was right so I couldn’t resist.

I received this pair several days after receiving the other pair from my order and once again I was faced with disappointment.  There were also several scratches and marks of discoloration on these shoes.  Needless to say, they are going to be returned as well.

I’ve always turned to Nine West when I’ve wanted a quality shoe for a reasonable price and this experience is going to make me think twice before ordering in the future.  It really makes me wonder what happens to their shoes before they’re sent out to customers.  I can’t be the only person who has had this issue since the same thing happened twice on pairs that were shipped separately.  I searched briefly but could not find just a general customer service email on the website and didn’t have a particular question that I was trying to address for their web form so I wrote a few sentences about my shopping experience on the Nine West Facebook page.  The company seems to be very active on their page and I’ve noticed that they have  addressed several questions, comments, and concerns from other users so I’m looking forward to hearing from someone shortly.

Review: Nine West ‘Booboo’ Pump

Nine West ‘Booboo’ Pump @Nine West
Original Price = $79.00
Purchase Price = $45.66

I first tried on this style in pewter when I was searching for a pair of silver pumps/sandals to wear for my rehearsal dinner back in October.  I loved that the bow detail on the side transformed these from just your average pointed-toe pump to one that is chic and girly but I didn’t end up getting them at the time because the color was just a bit darker than I was looking for.  Flash forward a couple of months and I see this little beauty on sale on the Nine West website so I decided to order it in taupe (no longer available as of today but you can order in other colors here).

When I received the order, I was very disappointed.  I still love the style but there were several scratches and marks of discoloration on the shoes so unfortunately I will be returning these.  As far as the fit is concerned, I have owned several pairs of Nine West shoes in the past and know that I can always rely on the fit being true to size and this pair was no exception.

Review: ALDO ‘Moad’ Pump

ALDO ‘Moad’ Pump @ALDO
Original Price = $60.00
Purchase Price = $30.82

One of the items on my 2011 shopping list was a pair of everyday black leather pumps that I can wear at work so when I saw that this pair was on sale I ordered right away.  This is my first pair of ALDO shoes and I am very pleased with my purchase!  In my opinion, these pumps fit true to size and are exactly what I had been looking for.  I’ve worn them to work a couple of times now and they are pretty comfortable.  Like most new shoes, they do need to be worn in a bit as they start to pinch my toes a little once I’ve had them on for several hours.  I have somewhat wide feet so a little pinching is a pretty common occurrence for me whenever I buy new shoes.  I have a feeling that once I wear these a few more times they will become one of the most comfortable pairs that I own.

If you sign up to receive emails from ALDO, you will receive a coupon code for 10% off a purchase which is what I used when I ordered these pumps.  Shipping was free at the time of my order.  This pump is also available in brown and there are still several sizes left in both colors so click here if you are interested in purchasing!

Sale Alert: Piperlime

Hive & Honey ‘Lorna’ Pump

Today through January 9th, take an extra 20% off all ‘Lime Tag Sale’ items with coupon code, SMILE.  Piperlime always offers free shipping and free returns, which is one of the reasons why I just LOVE shopping with them.  Please note, however, that if an item is listed as ‘Final Sale’ it cannot be returned.

I saw this navy suede pump a little while ago and thought it was very pretty so I’ve casually kept my eye on it ever since.  When I got my email about the extra % off promotion and saw that they still had it in my size I decided to order.  This will be my first experience with the Hive & Honey brand but this pump has gotten several 4 and 5-star reviews so I’m looking forward to receiving my order shortly.  Since I also had a $10 rewards card to use, I only paid a total of $19.56 for these shoes (originally $89).  Who could resist that?  Seriously..I really want to know who would be able to walk away from such an awesome deal.  Not me!  Hi, my name is Meg and I’m a shoe-a-holic.  : )

Closet Overhaul: Part 5, Accessories

Happy 2011, readers!  I’ve only got one more day off before returning back to work on Monday (no fun!) but I think I accomplished quite a bit during the last week and a half and made sure to spend A LOT of time relaxing as well.  2010 was such a great year for me and I am definitely looking forward to what 2011 will bring.

The last part of my closet overhaul is dedicated to accessories (shoes, bags, jewelry, belts, scarves, etc.) favorite!  I have a decent accessories collection as I tend to purchase these types of items most often.  I’m not going to take the time to go through everything that I currently own because this category is so broad but I have already recognized some areas for improvement.

Here is my accessories shopping list for 2011:

*nude pumps
*tall cognac boot
*tall rainboots
*basic black leather pumps
*basic brown leather pumps
*silver sandals or peep-toe pumps
*travel appropriate handbag
*chain strap shoulder bag
*brightly colored hobo or satchel
*wide black belt
*skinny animal print belt
*several bangle/stack bracelets
*statement necklace
*diamond stud earrings
*summer beach hat
*2-3 casual print scarves

Because of all of the fabulous after-Christmas sales, I was able to get a head start on this list and recently purchased these, these, and these.  The next thing I’ll need to do is prioritize my overall list of items to figure out what I should start looking for right away (ex. winter coat) and what I probably won’t need for several more months (ex. summer beach hat).  I’ve plugged the full list into the notes app on my iPod touch so that I’ll have it to reference while I’m out shopping.

I spent a little time browsing some of my favorite retailer’s websites today and started a ‘2011 Shopping List’ on Kaboodle, which you can view here.  This will allow me to save images and ideas for each category and will also serve as a guideline for the types of items I want to be looking for online and in-stores as I begin to cross things off of my list.

So, there you have it!  Resolution #1 for 2011!  I have others in mind as well and will be sharing those over the next week or two.  Here’s to another great year!!
